Website design for an artist's portfolio: David Green

We designed and built the portfolio website for David Green, a Norfolk-born artist who works in soft pastel and oil, keeping the design quiet so the paintings and his own words take centre stage.

The brief

An artist's website has one job: show the work and the person behind it, and make it easy to enquire. David paints in soft pastels and in oils, often of the Norfolk coast and water, Brancaster, Wells Harbour, Holkham and Weybourne, and exhibits in Nottingham, London and North Norfolk.

He wanted a place to show both media clearly, tell his story in his own voice and let buyers ask for sizes and prices directly.

Our approach

The site is deliberately small: a home page with his story beside a portrait, and one page each for oil and pastel. The background carries a soft wash of pastel colour and his signature works as the logo, so the site looks hand-made rather than templated.

Sizes and prices are confirmed by email rather than listed, which keeps the pages calm and gives him a direct conversation with each buyer. His phone number and email address sit at the foot of the page.

“Painting in pastel is just like drawing in colour.”
